About the Art Shows

Goward House has organized regular monthly Art Shows for over 10 years. Many of Victoria’s outstanding artists have used our venue to exhibit their work. The space available can accommodate up to 40 paintings. Art Shows are a perfect fit for Goward House, a place where art has been practiced  and appreciated for 80 plus years. Exhibits are organized by the Goward House Art Committee which selects the artists for inclusion and schedules the exhibits.

Federation of Canadian Artists

About Us:

The Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) is a national organization founded in Kingston, Ontario in 1941 and now headquartered in Vancouver. Nationally, The Federation of Canadian Artists was instrumental in the formation of the Massey Commission in 1949 and the subsequent formation of The Canada Council.

The Victoria Chapter, with 150 members from Sooke to the Gulf Islands, offers regular programs and workshops designed to raise artistic standards by stimulating participants to greater heights of achievement.

Each year in the spring and fall, the Chapter holds a show juried by FCA signature members (those who have attained high standing in the Federation). Approximately 100 paintings are submitted, with one third to one half selected for the show. Jurors look for the “wow” factor, good composition, mastery of the artist’s medium and technique, and originality of style. The result is a first class exhibition, varied in style and media, featuring the best works of 30 ~ 40 of the region’s top artists.

Goward House Portrait Painters

About Us:

The Goward House Portrait Painters Group was originally set up by Mrs. Goward many years ago, when Goward House was her home. The group did move across the street to St Ann’s for a while and then returned to Goward House when it was reestablished as a seniors activity centre. The Goward House Portrait painters consists of a group of dynamic painters.

The Club is a friendly and hospitable group. We have many excellent artists who are happy to share their thoughts and ideas with other members. Arrangements for optional lessons with notable art teachers are also arranged from time to time.

Oak Bay Art Club

About Us:

The Oak Bay Art Club is one of the oldest on Vancouver Island, having started during the Second World War. It is a non-profit organization of about 40 members from the Greater Victoria area, of varying ages and backgrounds, all with a love and interest in painting and art in general. It is the purpose of the Club to provide encouragement, education, and inspiration to the members.

Our group covers a wide range of interests in the visual arts, working in various media, from beginners to hobby artists to those who have painted a great deal of their lives, a number of whom are members of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

We meet in Oak Bay at the Windsor Park Pavilion, Windsor Road, Victoria from mid-September to the end of April, generally every 2nd Monday from 7:30PM to 9:30PM.

The Club is a friendly and hospitable group. We have many excellent artists who are happy to share their thoughts and ideas with other members. Arrangements for optional lessons with notable art teachers are also arranged from time to time.

The Studio of Harmonious Endeavours

About Us:

We meet Wednesday afternoons at Goward House to share a common passion for Chinese Brush Painting. The studio was founded by the accomplished local artist, Nenagh Molson (who continues to share her wisdom and skills in occasional studio workshops). The studio now comprises about a dozen artists working at various levels. We also have a dedicated annual December showing at Goward House for motivation and celebration.

With a rich and ancient history, this intriguing art form poses endless fascination on many levels, for novice and formal artist alike. In weekly sessions, we explore avenues inspired by local flora or fauna or other resources, practice techniques acquired in lessons, and share our individual pursuits. Our afternoons together promote mutual encouragement and skill-sharing, as well as a great ’harmony of spirit’ so necessary to artistic development. And we always find time for tea.
