It Spoke to Me

I have always painted but once I retired in 2010 and joined an art group at Goward House my need to paint blossomed.  While I have not had any formal art training, I do not consider myself self-taught.  I have learned so much from painting with others, talking about art and listening to advice.    This show is a retrospective of my art over the years.

While my art style would be called realism, I paint quickly with large loose brush stokes that help to depict movement and emotion.  As a result, I primarily paint in acrylic as its fast-drying capability works well with my approach to art.

I have titled this retrospective “It Spoke to Me” as that is how I chose my subject.  I usually paint from a reference photo, that I have either taken myself or one that a friend has given me.  I know right away upon seeing the image that I must paint it.   Sometimes I achieve what I am after, sometimes not.  Sometimes I will look at an old painting years later and know what it needs to give it life.     I have always painted landscapes, but lately I have added people to help tell a story.     Often the story will evoke memories for me and maybe you too.
